How to Make Your Own MIDI Hardware Sampler With a Raspberry Pi
Rounik Sethi on Sun, June 7th 0 comments
Imagine being able to build your own hardware sampler using a Raspberry Pi for about €90 only… it’s very possible and SamplerBox can show you how.

Some days I wake up and thank the universe that the Raspberry Pi exists. While I can’t count myself among the “Makers” of the world yet (a Maker friend I know is looking to change that), there’s something so inspiring about seeing projects going from concept to reality on a small scale.

Lifehacker recently showcased a video of SamplerBox in action. It’s a short 16 second video, but the point is not the video, but getting your hands on the tools and instructions you’ll need to make your own.

Here's the SamplerBox playing the Beatles' Strawberry Fields:

If you want to build your own, SamplerBox is a project that just requires a Raspberry Pi, an SD card and about €90 of spare cash. They tell us the wiring isn’t too taxing either. The full guide on how to make your own sampler is in the link below... oh, and you can download samples from the site too.

Here’s the bill of materials. When you break it down, it’s not as scary as it might seem to those less able (I’m talking about yours truly at this point ;)

  • Sparkfun 7-segment display : ~ 12 €
  • USB DAC PCM2704 : ~ 6,50 €
  • PCB SD card reader : ~ 1 €
  • Sparkfun microUSB breakout : ~ 2 €
  • 3.5mm stereo jack socket
  • USB A connector (for PCB)
  • 2 * Digitast switch
