Moog Grandmother - The Power Of The Oscillator Revealed
Hollin Jones on Thu, January 3rd 0 comments
The Moog Grandmother is a lot of fun to play, but if you understand how it does its magic you'll be sure to get the most out of it. Find out how in this short video.

Moog's Grandmother is a semi-modular analog synthesizer with a built-in arpeggiator, sequencer and spring reverb tank. Boasting a “no patching required” approach, its circuits, spring reverb and spirit are inspired by the classic Moog Modular Synthesizers, making it a powerful addition to a Mother-32, DFAM or any Eurorack modular system.

But even if it's fun to start pressing buttons, you'll still get much further and be more creative if you really understand how this synth works! In this short video from the course Moog Grandmother 101: Explained And Explored, Rishabh Rajan breaks down the fundamentals of Oscillator 1 - the heart of how the synth generates its sound.

Moog Grandmother 101: Explained And Explored

Rishabh runs you through the different wave shapes available on the oscillator, as well as showing you how to modify each one with the octave range control, demonstrating how it can be made to behave differently at different pitches. And of course there's a whole second oscillator which you can bring in too, to thicken up the sound or create many new tones. After starting at the beginning of the signal chain with the synth's oscillators you can then check out the rest of the videos in the course to learn about the many other sound design and performance tricks it has up its sleeve.
