Parametric Composition Using Opus Modus 2.0
Jor van der Poel on Mon, November 4th 0 comments
Parametric composition involves working with data, MIDI and programming in an unconventional way. But the results can be unlike anything you've heard before. Here's how to get started...

If you've ever stopped to think about the different methods we have to work with musical notation, you might have found that there are not that many options out there.

You can either input notes in a MIDI editor, a Score Editor or in a Tracker of sorts. All of these methods combine duration with pitch and often with velocities, all in one single event. This by its nature has some limitations. What if you want to loop 5 different Velocities over a list of 7 different notes? Or what if you want to use a geometric structure, a mathematical model or a poem to inspire new melodic ideas? Meet Opus Modus, the latest tool for "Parametric" Composition.

Parametric Composition allows you to interact with musical parameters derived from a near-infinite number of sources, process them, and combine them together in a full score. This score can be outputted to any DAW or plug-in, which then serves as a playback device.

In this video you will get a short introduction to Opus Modus as well as a practical example on one of its many usages. Fasten your seatbelts, you're in for a ride!
