How do I transfer a music song file to new computer?
Hi, I am trying to transfer a song file from Logic on my old computer to the new computer and put the song on a thumb drive. How do I drop my song into Logic on new computer? I have it on the desktop and tried to open a new song and drop it, but didn't work. Any ideas? Thanks. Also, I have a song on the old computer Logic program that seems to be too big for the thumb drive even though there is nothing on the thumb drive. How do I tranfer this song? Thanks for your help. Roz

Can you give us some more details on the specs (type of Mac i.e iMac, Macbook; processor; RAM; Hard Disk size; Airport?) on the old computer and the specs on the new computer. And what version of Logic you have on each computer You can choose Save a Copy As under the Logic File Menu. You can choose your Thumb Drive as the location. Make sure you tick 'Copy External Audio Files'. Or else Logic may not be able to find the associated audio files when you move it across to the new computer.

Gary, I think you need to edit the second line of your last post. ......between "RAM" and "Airport"

Hi redlogic, Just trying to ascertain exactly what Mac hardware the user has, so we can distinguish the best route to take to transfer the files from one machine to the other. For example, the amount of RAM which is in the unit. And if it is Airport compatible. The more details we have, the more we can help the user. Sorry the post may have sounded a bit confusing.

Yeah...I understand all of that. But...I think you need to take a GOOD LOOK at the words between "RAM" and "Airport". See it now?

Whoo! Sorry I only see the mistake now. Sorry guys. Definitely a slip of the keyboard. I'll get an Administrator to change it so it reads correct.

Hello Gary, Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you as I have been having a lot of trouble with my email on new computer which is now fixed. Yes, the old computer I was referring has 1 GB ram and is a 10.5.8 version and is a G5. I am using a Logic pro 8 program. My computer that I am trying to transfer a song to is a IMac with 2GB and has an Intel Core Duo. I just did the steps you mentioned in your previous message and saved as a copy in Logic File menu and choose thumb drive. In the end it copied, but didn't seem to complete the process saying there was insufficient space. I am a bit surprised as the song wasn't even that long. I had another file on the thumb drive that I haven't been able to delete, but it doesn't seem to be taking any space as there are no files attached to it. So this is one problem..... Then, I opened my Imac to see if I could drop in what was put into the thumb drive (even if it wasn't complete). I dropped it under the tracks and it asked me some questions such as do I want this to go into existing files, etc. I am not sure what to check. I tried to check a couple of answers, but to no avail. I want to be able to continue working on the song and don't want it all on one track. The audio loops and audio are appearing but completely out of order and not at all looking like my song. I love the song whichI did on the G5 and hope that I can retrieve it on the IMac so that I can continue to work on it. Any help is welcomed. Thank you. Roz

P.S. Gary, I have my song successfully transferred as a mp3 file. Am I able to somehow open this open and work on it? Roz

I think that the audio files associated with the project are obviously taking up a lot more space than is available on the thumb drive. Do you have any other form of external hard drive that you can copy the project onto? You could copy it through your network if both Macs are on the same network. If they are you will need to enable file sharing on the G5 sothat the iMac can access the logic project. Let me know if they are on the same network and I will take you through the steps to enable file sharing and how your iMac can acces and copy across the project via the network. If they are not on the same network, we will have to think of another way you cantransferthe file across. Maybe also check for us how big your logic project is. Choose the folder where you saved the copy to.then press Cmd+I. This will give you size of the folder. Your easiest option will be to get an external hard drive with enough size to copy the project onto.
