Heavy Synth Bass Sound
I want to replicate the heavy synth bass sound of Art vs. Science in Logic Express. Songs like Parlez-vous Francais?, Friend in the Field and Hollywood etc. Except I'm about as big a noob when it comes to subtractive synthesis as is possible to be, so I really don't know where to start and I can't find a preset bank that resembles the sound. I read a thread on this forum about replicating the synth bass sound of The Presets with the ES2 and managed to do it but it isn't the sound I'm after. So if anyone could please excuse my noobness and point me in the right direction that'd be great! Cheers

Hi doogsy, Welcome to the forums! There's a lot of different routes you could take. For example there's on lot of good info on boosting bass and low-end in your music on the Hub. Check out these articles on how to add more bas / fatten up your sounds in the mix: http://www.macprovideo.com/hub/logic-pro/how-to-add-bottom-kick-drum-logic-pro-pro-tools http://www.macprovideo.com/hub/logic-pro/quick-tip-creating-fatter-bass-logics-subbass-plugin Hope this helps Rounik

Cheers for the reply Rounik! Those articles would probably be really helpful if I had a half-decent sound to start off with but I'm at square one at the moment, still with no luck.

Doog, Is there any preset that you've found that's even slightly close to what you're looking for? Because if so, I was going to suggest that you post about which one it is, and then also post a link to an online video (or even an mp3 clip) of the sound you want. Then perhaps myself or someone else can A/B them and make a suggestion about what you need to get the sound closer.

Well in that other thread that I was talking about, the ES2 preset called Monster Sine was used, so I tried adding experimenting with and adding distortion to that but wasn't getting the sound I want. So no, I haven't found a preset that's close but here's a link to an example of the sound I want. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRZ-jLOrFfk Specifically, the bass sound in the chorus/main verse. Cheers!

Hmmm.... sounds like live overdriven electric bass to me, if not a real one then a pretty good emulation! there is a definite picking sound on the attack of each note in the chorus, which is adding high harmonics to the rest of the note. The high harmonics are being distorted more than the deep bass tones. Maybe you could try making two sounds - one deeper sine bass, and then a higher more crazy one for the harmonics with lots of drive. Maybe even ring modulation for the second sound. Then layer them. I may be talking total bs though so I'll giev it a go myself and see if it works! Cheers Hamish

Hi again so I couldn't get the layering to sound good, but I think this is a pretty good distorted synth sound: http://www.box.net/shared/ov6n0r2lul i tried to simulate the 'click' by modulating the pitch of the very start of each note, but I haven't quite got it right yet. Its a trick Olav uses when he wants to create a sharp attack for a synth sound (check out his tutorials for designing sounds for dance music: https://www.macprovideo.com/tutorial/live8402) Its not exactly the same sound as what you were after, but I thinks its close... anyway just thought I'd have a go! Hamish PS: Since I uploaded the file I've actually added a reverb to it too, the mix is set to about 15% wet with a lot of the bass cut out. Its added a sheen to the top end that wasn't there before, which has made it sound a bit fuller, so maybe you should experiment with some reverb too H

Thanks Hamish! Since you pointed out the fact that the sound resembles a synthetic electric bass guitar, I've done some more experimenting with overdriving these sounds. I had tried that before but was never got what I was after. But thanks anyway for your effort in creating that sound and that link to that article of Olav's, that was helpful too!

While I'm here, I would also really appreciate it if someone could have a go at replicating the synth sound used for the first half of this song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGw9VCkIr3M Hope I'm not asking too much but thanks again!

Hey doogsy Here is everything I could source about making harmonic rich distorted bass, all thrown together in one patch. http://www.box.net/shared/ia647t2ktc Oscillator 1 is being freqyuency modulated by osc 2. Osc 3 is synced to Osc 2, so the source is rich in harmonics to begin with. Then there's a bit of chorus and some sine level, then there's two different distortions working on different frequency bands. Turned out OK! Nowhere near the same level as Art vs Science but I had a lot of fun trying, and I'd use it myself for sure. cheers! Hamish
