Olav's Sweeps and Smart Controls

Olav sets up an ES2 as a noise generator.
1) He somehow gets it to play that noise with the song when there is no object on the ES2 track in the Arrange page. Bizarre!
2) Then, he resets the Smart Controls, changing THRESHOLD of the Compressor to FX/MD/INTENSITY of the ES2 by clicking on the knob and then going to: Inspector> Parameter Mapping>Global>Effects>FX/MD/INTENSITY. He is then able to use that knob to adjust the Chorus on the ES2. When I do that, the ES2 just produces a super low pitch that is either barely audible or completely inaudible... weird!
Can you please explain?
