The NLE AudioPedia series, our video-based audio encyclopedia, is an invaluable resource for sound engineers, musicians, students, educators and all audio enthusiasts. This ninth installment is about MIDI terminology.
AudioPedia - noun | Au·di·o·Pe·di·a | [aw-dee-oh-pee-dee-uh] An animated, short format video informational resource explaining in plain English all aspects of audio: acoustics, mixing, mastering, recording, digital audio terms, microphones, recording, and more.
Our AudioPedia series is a comprehensive video dictionary of audio terminology. Created by audio expert Joe Albano, this encyclopedia of technical terms is the ultimate audio reference tool. Here are the topics covered and defined in the ninth installment of this authoritative series:
MIDI:
-MIDI | Musical Instrument Digital Interface
-DIN (Cable) | USB (MIDI)
-MIDI In | Out | Thru
-Channel Voice Messages
-Velocity
-Pitch Bend
-Aftertouch | Pressure
-Control Change | CC
-System Exclusive | SysEx
I've been using MIDI and MIDI devices for years (since the early 80's when it just started out. Wish I still had my old Roland drum machine!) Being mostly self-taught left huge gaps in my knowledge. If i never needed it or it was too hard to figure out, I simply never learned about it. This course filled in a bunch of gaps as far as what the heck is going on in the machines, some interesting history, and of course basic concepts and their applications.
As with all the AudioPedia entries, this course is well-organized and information dense. Recommended for beginners and non-beginners alike.

A solid intro to MIDI basics. This series is well made and presented. Would love to see an advanced MIDI tutorial as well going deeper.

Once again, Joe Albano takes a target course and demystifies it in easy, quick, simple to understand terms with illustrations and examples. For anyone just starting to try and understand MIDI what MIDI is and it does, this course is a great primer!
