What is the advantage to using something like Vienna Ensemble Pro?
Programs like Vienna Ensemble Pro allows Play to access more system and virtual RAM when running. They also allow will open up more voices in the Play engine
Programs like Vienna Ensemble Pro allow for more seamless use across multiple users on OS X by creating template metaframes that load automatically when logging into www.soundsonline.com
A separate shell running the Play engine will not crash if Logic does. Also, switching between cues for a movie or television is made much easier because all of the instruments don't have to reload
Programs like Vienna Ensemble Pro enhance the sound quality of the instruments loaded in Play
2
What does ADT stand for?
Analog Dipole Tremolo-This is a very extreme form of tremolo accessed via the player in the Play Engine.
Automatic Double Tracking-It is a system of creating a double of a performance that was originally created at Abbey Road Studios by Sir George Martin.
Analog Diode Transistor-This is a mathematical model of a tube that is integrated into the effects system of the Play engine and was developed to give Play a warmth akin to tape.
Analog Direct Transform-This is a spectral shaper built into the effects engine in Play's mixer.
3
When routing audio from Play back into your DAW of choice...
Use MIDI controller 12 to change the volume on specific Play MIDI channels.
The Play engines' volume should be automated on input into the DAW. (Automate the volume on the axes).
Sum all channels in the Play engine to open up processor threads in your DAW of choice.
Use Volume automation from your DAW to Play/VEP.
4
What's different about using Play in Pro Tools vs. Logic?
Play is opened as a VST3 plugin and has the ability to record pitch bend per note.
Play opens up as an AAX plugin and should be installed as such.
Play has the ability to edit samples in its dedicated audio editor.
Play is opened as an AU plugins and has limited routing capability.
5
How do you access the EastWest SSL effects section?
The SSL FX section is located at the insert area at the top of the channel strip, and includes an area to instance AU plugins from 3rd party manufacturers
Via the mixer, at the bottom of a channel strip, by pressing the FX button next to the solo button. It is included with the Ghostwriter library, and can be purchased separately to apply to other libraries
The SSL FX section is available in Logic, Pro Tools, and Ableton Live under the AU settings tab in the Browser
The SSL FX section is in the Player area, and is only available to the Ministry of Rock and Ghostwriter libraries.
6
When using Play in Multi-timbral mode in your DAW...
CPU usage is significantly decreased
RAM must be reallocated manually
Play cannot use all of the available processor threads
Each MIDI channel of play must have its own instrument
7
What is an impulse response?
An audio file created from the recording of a physical space and used in convolution reverb
The reaction of a delay to the impulse of a Dirac spike
A product of physical modeling synthesis and is the mathematical model of a vibrating string
The crossover transition point between sample layers of an instrument.
8
How is Soundflower and similar apps used with Play?
Soundflower allows for the bussing of audio between audio applications without the need for ReWire or other specialized audio bussing protocols. It is handy for using Play in standalone mode.
Soundflower is an effects suite that can be used with the Play engine when it is in standalone mode. It specializes in modulation plugins like ensemble, chorus, and flanging.
Soundflower is used to bus MIDI between applications.
Soundflower is a software that allows for complex modulation via MIDI to control parameters in the Play engine.
9
If you are using a 3rd-party audio router like Soundflower or Jack, how can you record the audio from Play but leave other channels like the click from being recorded as well?
You can use these programs to send audio that you do not wish to record to different virtual channels, while still being able to monitor the audio via main outputs.
These programs have intelligent switching algorithms that never let audio be recorded as a mixed interleaved file.
These programs have buffers that allow the user to pick between different takes and also create composites of interleaved, de-interleaved, or separated audio signals.
These programs have gates that take out any unwanted channels at the press of a button.
10
How can you quickly access all of the outputs of Play within Vienna Ensemble Pro?
In Live, select all external instruments and choose ‘increment outputs' from the edit window.
in Live, select ‘Auto assign multi-output instrument' under the edit menu.
Use the ‘+' button at the bottom of the channel strip in VEP to automatically create auxiliaries for the multiple outputs.
Use the ‘+' button at the bottom of the channel strip in Live to access multiple channels from the Play engine.
11
What are ‘Articulations'?
Articulations are located in the modulation matrix of the FX section and are used to change effect settings simultaneously
Articulations are ways to change the note length of MIDI notes playing a Play instrument
Articulations are different ways to make an instrument respond to tempo changes
Articulations are different methods and techniques for playing an acoustic instrument
12
What is the IAC bus?
It is the ‘Input Absolute Corrector' and is used to convert relative values to absolute values over a MIDI connection
The IAC bus is used to connect Open Studio Formats between DAWs
It is the ‘Input Attenuation Controller' and is used to cull errant MIDI data from transmission between applications
It is the ‘Inter Application Communication' bus-It allows MIDI transmission between any MIDI capable application in OS X
13
In Ableton Live, what kind of channel strip should be used to control Play Via Vienna Ensemble Pro?
Live should use multiple external instruments. They handle both audio and MIDI.
Live should use the IAC bus to send MIDI to Play, and an auxiliary to listen to the audio coming back.
Live should use MIDI tracks to control VEP, and auxiliaries to receive the audio from Play.
Live should use grouped auxiliaries to control VEP and Play.
14
What does KS stand for?
Key Switch
Kit Solo
Kerning Script
Katz Scale
15
What is a potential negative to using 3rd-party shells to house the Play engine?
Potential mixed streams of audio passing over the audio bus
Incompatibility with certain Play instrument libraries
Phase cancellation due to the 2 mixing systems
Increased latency between the applications
16
How many channels can be routed out of Play simultaneously when using Soundflower?
16
32
64
24
17
What does DXF stand for?
Direct X File
Dynamic Crossfade
Direct Cross Flow
It is referencing the Yamaha DX7 FM synthesis technology
18
When using a 3rd party shell to host Play...
The shell host can use the Play Engine's effects section for processing other audio.
Separate instances of Play do not necessarily need to be channelized for MIDI. The shell can handle the assignments.
The Shell can optimize the Play settings to match the current configuration.
The shell host may be used to provide a sidechain via Play's Player section.
19
What does the Play Engine use for copy protection?
Challenge and Response
iLok
eLicenser
Serial Number provided via email
20
How do you load more than one instrument in the Browser window?
In the player, choose ‘multi' from the menu button
Play can only run a single instrument at a time when used in a DAW
Double-click on the instrument, and select ‘Add'
Double-click and choose ‘multi-timbral
21
What is the best way to get the Play engine to run most efficiently?
Adjust the number of MIDI channels in Play so that instruments are sharing MIDI channels, and therefore CPU threads
Set the engine performance to ‘low'
Create a single shell of Play in Multi-output mode and assign CPU per instrument loaded
Have individual instances of Play on individual tracks in your DAW of choice
22
What is the difference between elements and performances?
Elements are sliced audio files taken from original performances. Performances are a clever way to switch between different loaded instruments.
Elements allow the user to choose between material types for the different pieces of an instrument. A performance is a velocity controlled dynamics solution for stringed instruments mostly.
Elements are all of the various ways an instrument can be played, sometimes keyswitched, and sometimes available via the articulation pane. Performances are actual recordings of a master musician playing the instrument.
Elements are key pieces of drum kits, and performances are grouped percussion ensembles.
